I had 2 of the older non-VR versions of this lens, and to be perfectly honest, they sucked. Big time. I bought one on eBay for a very low price, and the other came with a 35mm SLR I also bought on ebay (also for a very low price). Focusing was very slow and largely inaccurate, resulting in out of focus images. They were also very soft, meaning that no part of the image was totally sharp. Ever.

I sold both lenses (thankfully for more than they cost me ;-) )

I then had the opportunity to shoot the newer VR version, after borrowing one from a friend. By the end of the day I had bought my own - I was so impressed with it. Sharpness was no longer an issue: even at 300mm, handheld at pretty low shutter speeds, the VR did excellent work of producing sharp and detailled images.

I had been saving up for a 70-200 f2.8 (and still am), but for the money, this really is excellent value.

I'm pretty happy with this lens, the pictures produced are sharp, although they lose it a bit beyond 200mm. It feels weird not having a manual focus option, but the lens only cost me £75, so I guess I can't complain too much!
